Section 2: Historic Roots

Jeptha Wade's Gift and the Birth of a Cultural Mecca

In 1882, Western Union telegraph pioneer Jeptha H. Wade donated 63 acres of rolling countryside to the city to establish Wade Park. In the 1880s, Case School of Applied Science and Western Reserve University relocated to the district, sparking its identity as an academic center.

In 1916, the Cleveland Museum of Art opened its grand Greek Revival marble palace on the shores of Wade Lagoon. In 1931, John L. Severance endowed Severance Hall to honor his late wife, giving the Cleveland Orchestra one of the most acoustically sublime concert halls on Earth. University Circle evolved into an unmatched civic monument to philanthropy, culture, and science.
